And what this means for couples, small businesses, and the future of bespoke design as we know it…

The world of wedding stationery is changing, and as a small, family-run business, we’ve been feeling the shift firsthand. In recent years, we’ve noticed a decline in traditional Save the Dates and a growing trend of wedding planners, stylists, and décor companies taking over what was once the domain of bespoke stationers - on-the-day stationery.

So, what does this mean for independent wedding stationers like us, and how do we navigate this evolving landscape?

The Decline of Save the Dates

Once a staple of wedding planning, Save the Dates are being replaced by digital announcements, wedding websites, and even quick group messages.

Couples are cutting costs where they can, and since Save the Dates are often seen as “nice to have” rather than essential, they’re one of the first to go.

As stationers, this means we need to rethink how we position them - not just as a date reminder, but as the first impression of a wedding’s personality and style.

The Changing Role of On-the-Day Stationery

Menus, place cards, seating plans, and signage are increasingly being bundled into wedding stylist or décor packages.

While this is convenient for couples, the artistry of bespoke stationery can get lost when it’s treated as an add-on rather than a craft in its own right. We’re seeing more mass-produced designs replace carefully illustrated, personalised details - something that can change the entire guest experience.

Adapting to the Shift

Rather than seeing this as a setback, independent stationers can use this moment to evolve:

  • Expand services - Introduce new products such as Fabric Signage.

  • Focus on small impactful details - Wax seals, vow booklets, luxury paper, and custom envelope liners still make a big difference.

  • Highlight emotional value - These are keepsakes, not just paper. The right design becomes part of a couple’s story.

  • House Collections - Create a more budget friendly concept to appeal to different budgets.

Looking Ahead

The wedding industry will always evolve, but small, creative businesses have one advantage that mass production never will - adaptability and a deeply personal touch.

By focusing on what makes bespoke stationery unique, we can continue to thrive, even as trends change.
